Perched on an island in Lake of the Woods, Ontario, and surrounded by the granite outcroppings and sculptural landforms of the Canadian Shield, Lookout Lodge is a timber framed retreat shaped by its rugged natural setting.
Set into the island’s granite bedrock, the design uses expansive glazing on multiple elevations to frame views of water, forest, and sky. A bold cantilevered mass reaches out over the rock and lake to reinforce the building’s relationship with its surroundings.
The wood frame structure and natural material palette allow the building to sit comfortably within its island context, creating a sense of cohesion between architecture and landscape. The cantilevers Glulam column structure also create a sheltered outdoor zone beneath, offering a protected space for gathering or quiet retreat close to the water’s edge.
