HG Residence, located in the River Heights neighborhood of Winnipeg, is a classic mid-century modern bungalow that had remained untouched since its 1960s construction. Our renovation and addition project sought to breathe new life into the home, seamlessly merging its mid-century charm with contemporary sophistication.
The design approach centered on modernizing the space while honouring the home’s mid-century roots. We began by gutting the original structure, creating a blank canvas that allowed us to reimagine the living spaces.
A key aspect of the renovation was the expansion of what would become the open plan kitchen and living area, which involved raising the ceiling and pushing out the back wall. This addition not only increased the home’s footprint but also created a more open and airy atmosphere. The elevated ceiling and accompanying clerestory windows extended the space vertically and allowed more natural light to filter in from above, adding a sense of spaciousness and connection to the outdoors while maintaining privacy.
Every surface of the HG Residence was updated to align with its modernized interior. The house was reclad in dark panels, , and new brick and oversize concrete panels were added on the fireplace wall. . A large deck was added adjacent to the living room, featuring floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that create an extended living space outdoors. Finally, a slatted, street-facing screen was introduced to provide privacy for gatherings in the new outdoor entertaining area.
