Clear Water Retreat’s private docking space and boathouse respond gently to the natural surroundings, its neighbouring cottage and the cultural context of the Lake of the Woods area. The relationship between the boathouse and the lake encompasses every aspect of the project’s architecture— sensitivity to climate, humidity, noise, sunlight, and particularly the panoramic views across the water from the upper elevated seating pavilion. The curving glulam roof of this tree-top space mediates the shift from water to land, structural members extend beyond the eave reaching upward toward to pine forest beyond. In the evening the loft space glows as a beacon for late-arriving guests.
